F18A to PICO9918 Dongle Adapter

The F18A to PICO9918 Dongle Adapter Kit allows you to connect an F18A MkI VDP replacement to any PICO9918 VGA or HDMI output dongle, or a TI-99 4A No-Cut Mod.

F18A to PICO9918 dongle adapter kit

This adapter board is compatible with the F18A MkI only (the revision with a 22-pin FFC output cable).

Compatibility

The adapter is compatible with the following PICO9918 accessories (not included):

  • VGA Dongle
  • HDMI AV Dongle (with audio): see Digital AV Dongle
  • No-cut Kit (TI-99/4A): see TI-99 4A No-Cut Mod

What's in the Kit

  • 1x fully assembled F18A to PICO9918 Dongle Adapter PCB
  • 1x 5V power lead (only required for the HDMI dongle)
  • 1x 120mm (5") PICO9918 FFC cable

Optional Accessories

  • 200mm (8") PICO9918 FFC cable
  • 300mm (12") PICO9918 FFC cable
  • 200mm (8") F18A MkI FFC cable
  • 300mm (12") F18A MkI FFC cable

Board Overview

F18A adapter connected between an F18A MkI board and a Digital AV (HDMI) dongle

The adapter has an FFC connector on each side:

  • F18A side: connects to the F18A MkI's 22-pin FFC output cable.
  • PICO9918 side: connects to a PICO9918 FFC cable (12-pin, 0.5mm pitch), which then plugs into your VGA dongle, HDMI dongle, or no-cut kit.

Two additional headers are broken out on the board:

Header Labels Purpose
HDMI power +5V / GND Connect the supplied 5V power lead here to power the HDMI dongle. Not required for the VGA dongle or no-cut kit.
F18A audio AOUT / AGND Passes the F18A's own audio pin through from the 22-way FFC. Provided because the standard F18A VGA dongle has the same provision; in practice it is not used.

Whether you need either of them depends on the accessory.

With a VGA dongle or no-cut kit

Both accessories are passive: they draw no 5V rail and have no audio pins, so the two FFC cables are the whole install and both extra headers are left alone.

F18A adapter wired to a VGA dongle or no-cut kit: the 22-way FFC in and the 12-way FFC out are the whole install, with the HDMI PWR and AOUT/AGND headers unused

With an HDMI dongle

The HDMI dongle adds the 5V lead, because its MS9288C encoder runs off the +5V on FFC pin 12 and nothing else here supplies it.

Audio is wired exactly as it is on a PICO9918: a 2-wire lead from a point on the host mainboard straight to the dongle's AUDIO IN/GND header. It does not go through the F18A or the adapter, so the adapter's AOUT/AGND pads are left unused. See Audio Wiring for the dongle end, and the per-machine tap points linked from there.

F18A adapter wired to an HDMI dongle: the same two FFC cables, plus a required 5V lead from the host board into the HDMI PWR header which feeds FFC pin 12, plus an audio lead running from the mainboard straight to the dongle and bypassing both the F18A and the adapter

Installation

  1. Connect the F18A MkI's 22-pin FFC output cable to the adapter's F18A-side FFC connector.
  2. Connect the included (or an optional longer) PICO9918 FFC cable between the adapter's PICO9918-side FFC connector and your chosen accessory: VGA dongle, HDMI dongle, or no-cut kit.
  3. If using the HDMI dongle, connect the supplied 5V power lead to the adapter's +5V/GND header. For audio, wire the dongle's AUDIO IN/GND header to a tap point on the host mainboard, the same as on a PICO9918. The adapter's AOUT/AGND pads are not used.
  4. Power on your F18A-equipped system as usual.
